High Spirited Sun Worshipper

Water as an Elixir of Life: Dietmar Stuck Creates a Flow in Africa

Hard to believe: When we want a glass of water to satisfy our thirst, we simply open the tap. When a family in Africa needs a canister of water, they have to put back 20 km to get to the next water well, where they are waiting for hours on end in queues of more than 50 people. And then it is still possible that there is no more water because the windmill does not work in still air.

To Dietmar Stuck Junior (27) this was hardly believable as well, until his eyes were opened last year in Africa. “I pondered and pondered how to solve the problem“, the well master, who worked for two years in Australia, says. The decisive idea: a solar well pumping station. And if there is no sunshine, water can be pumped by means of a hand pump.

No sooner said than done! The prototype can be seen at the industrial park St. Veit, and Stuck already received a prize for his pumping station. Out of 41 competitors, his flash of inspiration was valued by the start-up centre „Gründerzentrum“ with the “build Impulse“ trophy.

First distribution partners have shown their interest, too: There is one purchaser from Berlin and one from Dubai. Moreover, a Swiss aid organization has also declared their interest.

Encouraged by his parents who have constructed wells for decades and his wife Birgit, Stuck is working seven days a week at the moment. This is going to change, however, by midyear: “Then our first child will be born.“ The due date for the baby girl’s birth happens to coincide with the wedding anniversary. On July 12, they made their wedding vows to each other in Mauritius.
